The project of shelter initialized with the selection of one shelter design by Aoife O'Donnell. Acting as athe head designer of the team, O'Donnell presented the design as an A-shaped shelter, resembling the roof of houses lieing on the corner of the site which is set to be the American garden area within the University of Dundee Botanic Gardens. The simplistic and concept of a portal was simply intriguing as a final design in whole. The group of the shelter project was randomly selected with every person of the group attempted a design of shelter for the site, making every single member familiar with the site.
The group was assembled to brief on the project and its definite timeline of process. One of the main point of discussion of the day was the name of the shelter and subsequently, the project. Various names were brought up to attention; gAtewAy, Triad, A, Delta, Waki, Vortex, Portal. The names were argued to mainly accentuate the shape of the shelter (A, Delta) while others tried to focus on the purpose which acts as a portal/shelter, whereas it lies on a pathway. Through humble democracy, the name that was chosen was defined by Dictionary.com as a vital, basic, decisive, or pivotal point; The Crux.
The group discussion was also joined by lecturers of the Architecture School led by the Year 2 Leader, Carol Robertson who acts as supervisor. Throught he discussion, inputs were considered within the team to brand the shelter to a higher level and to fundraise.
Design And Construction
The head designer, O'Donnell finalised the design with a scaled model of 1:20 with a finalised clear vision of the construction of process of the shelter, with sections and plans already drawn on CAD. David Byrne also helped in visualising the shelter to a better scale by drawing on Google SketchUp.
The design of the shelter, on the other hand was altered slightly with the centre height stripped down to 3 metres, reducing the length of timber required.
Klara Svobodova assessed the costs of timber required for the construction of the shelter and collected prices and damages from various sources and settled upon one timber company namely *insert company name here*
Fundraising
The funds require to support the construction of the shelter was heavily discussed and was brought up as one of the most obstruction of the project in whole. Every suggestion was debated and weighted as a possibility to raise the fund.
Joseph Holmes and David Byrne participated in an awareness campaign that was planned to raise money by having their legs waxed, simple and painful act of attraction to appeal to students that could benefit for the funds, alongside a bake sale/tea and coffee stand which is planned to be due on Friday. Other events include Open Mic Night that will be held on Thursday starting promptly at 7, FIFA Tournament with date to be announced planned to be in the Matthew Building lecture theatres.
Documentation
Various methods of documentations, focusing on the internet media are justified. Pages on the internet such as Facebook page and blog entries are to name a few of the beginning of brand development. This meant to aware people of the project which is then benefit to the fundraising of the project.
